Unlike photovoltaics, the expansion of wind power in Austria has not yet taken place at the speed necessary to achieve the 2030 target in the Renewable Expansion Act. This is due, among other things, to lengthy approval procedures, different standards and regulations in the nine federal states, and resistance to wind energy in some regions.
In parallel, the expansion of photovoltaics and the expansion of the grid must be driven forward, as well as the storage capacities for electricity must be increased. In order to decarbonize the entire energy system, sectors such as transport and buildings must also switch to electricity-based solutions (e.g. e-mobility instead of combustion engines, heat pumps instead of gas heating). The resulting increased electricity demand must in turn be covered.
Promote Renewable Expansion
- In order to cover 100% of the increasing domestic electricity consumption (national balance) with renewable sources, the Federal Government is relying on the expansion of domestic energy carriers (PV, Wind, Hydropower, Biomass).
Expand nationwide emission-free energy with the goal of 100 percent supply from renewable energy
Emission-free energy supply should be expanded nationwide and statewide. Access must be affordable for all parts of the population.
Electricity:
By 2027, 95 percent renewable
By 2030, 100 percent renewable
Solar and wind power should preferably be used for this. Hydro power should only be expanded if it makes sense. Energy communities (also cross-regional) should continue to be promoted.
