Promotion of Active Mobility
- Commitment to increase the share of bicycle traffic from currently seven percent to 14 percent.
- Establishment of a nationwide strategy coordinated with the infrastructure expansion of ÖBB and ASFINAG for the construction of cycle paths or cycle highways, in order to plan or build climate-relevant accompanying measures in road and railway construction projects from the outset.
- Revision of the funding criteria for the construction of cycling infrastructure, among other things with regard to topographical conditions. As well as the goal of creating a predictable and reliable system.
- Enhancement of cycle paths in rural areas.
- In order to meet individual mobility needs in the regions, infrastructure planning should consistently take into account pedestrian and cycle paths.
- Further development and enhancement of the framework conditions for pedestrian traffic.
- Consideration of pedestrian traffic in the design of legal framework conditions for traffic organization such as the StVO and in the design of road space.
- Further adjustments of the StVO to the needs of active mobility and public transport. In this context, the bicycle regulation and one-way regulations should be reviewed in terms of ongoing developments.
Promoting Cycling and Walking
- Cycling and walking paths should be constructed with sufficient width and, as far as possible, separated from the car lanes. They should be barrier-free, ecologically friendly, and (artistically) attractive. Car lanes should be reduced in favor of cycling and pedestrian traffic. Planting trees along cycling and walking paths reduces heat and purifies the air. There is a need for a continuous bicycle network throughout Austria that meets the mobility needs in the city and the countryside (work, shopping, leisure, children, etc.) and also improves the connections between the city and the countryside. This also adds value to tourism. A portion of the rental bicycles should be equipped with child seats and baskets or be accessible for the disabled.
