A car-free day can contribute to reducing traffic emissions and promoting awareness of active mobility in larger cities. Currently, there are no car-free days in Austrian cities.
In all larger cities, there should be a mandatory car-free day every month for everyone, with the exception of emergency trips and emergency vehicles. This will, on the one hand, make the benefits of car-free city centers tangible (including less noise, better air, free and safe streets for pedestrians and cyclists, and faster progress of emergency vehicles) and on the other hand, create opportunities to actively question our everyday habits or try out new behaviors. To compensate, public transport should run more frequently and be available at a lower cost or free of charge.
