In Austria, a tax is levied on the consumption of electrical energy, which currently amounts to 0.015 Euros per kilowatt-hour. For the period from May 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024, this rate has been reduced to 0.001 Euros per kilowatt-hour.
Railway transport companies are not completely exempt from this tax, even though they already invest significantly in environmentally friendly technologies. The abolition of the electricity tax for these companies would reduce their operating costs and strengthen the competitiveness of the railway compared to other modes of transport. This could lead to a shift in traffic from the road to the rail, reducing CO₂ emissions and thus making an important contribution to climate protection.
This point was agreed upon in the government program.
Abolition of the energy tax for railway transport companies to make rail travel and freight transport on the rail more attractive.
